Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
