The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.
Initial reports from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.
"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India recently after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
